Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, is recognized as a global name in education and innovation. It has become a top choice for professional studies.

People admire KIIT for its good academic courses, community service, and as a university that cares about kindness and helping others. KIIT’s fast growth over 25 years is a unique success story in India. It is truly a journey from humble beginnings to great achievements.

Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology  started in 1992-93 as a small Industrial Training Institute. But 1997 is considered the real start year because it began offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Engineering, Management, and Computer Applications.

In 2007, many new schools joined KIIT, including Law, Biotechnology, Medical Sciences, Dental Sciences, Nursing, Mass Communication, Film and Media, Fashion, and KIIT International School.

Since then, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology has grown rapidly. Today, about 40,000 students study there, including 2,000 students from 65 countries. More than 100,000 KIIT alumni have done well in their careers in education, business, government jobs, and entrepreneurship.

It is also a Deemed to be University and holds Special Consultative Status with the UNECOSOC. Together with KISS, its sister institute, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology is a family of over 100,000 people.

The campus has a 2,600-bed super-speciality hospital called Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), a large multi-storey central library, a research centre, a 22-storey building for research and innovation, auditoriums (the largest seating 5,000 people), 18 sports complexes, many international-level stadiums, 30 food courts, and a rose garden. KIIT is proud to be the greenest campus in India.

It is hard to believe that such a famous and respected university was started by a simple, humble man, Dr. Achyuta Samanta. He began KIIT with only Rs 5,000. He had big dreams and wanted to make a difference.

Dr. Samanta started Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology in two rented rooms with 12 students and 2 staff. Now, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology  has grown beyond imagination. It spreads over 36 square kilometres with 25 green campuses. It employs more than 3,000 top teachers and researchers and 15,000 staff members.

Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), a sister institution of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology  is the world’s largest fully free residential educational institute for tribal children.Established in 1993, KISS provides education, food, accommodation, and healthcare to over 80,000 tribal students.

KIIT has received accreditations and approvals from important national and international bodies such as Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET, USA) and Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET, UK) because of its quality research, innovations, and publications.

Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology has had excellent student placement since it started because of its good teaching and strong reputation.

Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology ranks between 601-800 in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2024. Its Computer Science Engineering course ranks between 301-400 and overall Engineering ranks 401-500 in the world.

It has received an A++ grade from India’s National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and ranks 15th nationally according to National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF – Ministry of Education).

Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology  has also been the top private university for innovation for two years in a row (2020 and 2021), according to All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) Government of India. It ranks 168th among universities worldwide in the Times Higher Education Young University Ranking 2024.

Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology  has done a lot for sports too, producing 23 Olympians. The university has won awards like the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Sport star

Award, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) India Sports Award, and Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar 2022 for supporting sports and encouraging youth through Corporate Social Responsibility.

KIIT and KISS are also the nodal centres for the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Football for Schools program in Asia. Besides education and sports, KIIT supports local art, culture, sculpture, rural development, literature, and spirituality.

All of these achievements are because of the vision, discipline, hard work, and selfless service of its founder, Dr. Achyuta Samanta – lovingly called Samanta Sir. His inspiring journey from very humble beginnings to leading two great institutions is truly remarkable.
